Yes, it is true that I could lose my present health care benefits if I got fired or laid off. There is risk in all aspects of life. The emphasis here is on the word COULD. However, if national health care came to be I WOULD lose the level of care that I currently have. I know this because no government can provide every citizen with the level of health care I currently enjoy. It would bankrupt the nation. Given that my personal level of care would be lower under a national system, I would hope that I would have to pay less for the less comprehensive benefit.

National Healthcare for the USA
by sammielee24 injust an fyi for anyone interested - there is a major drive on to push the bill forward for national healthcare in the usa.
you can sign the petition by going to http://www.onecarenow.org/.. it has gone through one part of the process last year and now the push is on to get it moved to the next level - it is backed by over 400 groups including the uaw i believe.
it is no longer if it happens, it is only a matter of time as to when it happens.

Whats interesting about the national health care issue is that more and more CEO's in the US are looking at national health care as a solution to their problems especially regarding retiree health care. The financial liabilities are staggering. Shifting these liabilities from the private sector to the public sector would be a boon for many companies (think about GM and the $1,000-$1,500 added cost per vehicle to cover employee/retiree benefits). Competitivness would improve, sales would go up, and executive pay would sky rocket as market share gains and stock prices rise.
The challenge of applying universal coverage in the States (in my opinion) is population. While residents of Canada and the UK might be thrilled about their health care systems, Canada has 32,000,000 residents and the UK has 60,000,000 residents while the US has 300,000,000 residents. Whatever challenges Canada and the UK had in implementing and operating their health care systems, the US will have 5-10 times those very challenges plus a number of challenges that are uniquely American.
On a personal level, I do have outstanding coverage through my employer (for now anyways). I doubt that the level of care I enjoy today would stay the same, much less improve, if national health care were implemented. For that reason I am skeptical about national health care. Perhaps if the plan were implemented in a manner that everyone from the President to local City Council members and from Bill Gates to the homeless guy living under a bridge somewhere all had to use the same system (fill out the same forms, stand in the same lines, recieve the same great or crappy care depending on points of view), I might get on board. Otherwise the health care system in the States would stay the same except far more people would be recieving less than adequate care (including me) while the haves and the connected would scarcely be aware that national health care even existed.

Remember when KH's had a piano and real singing?
by WingCommander inthe thread about got me thinking about my very early childhood, back when witnesses were allowed to be social and have get togethers.
they also had a piano in every congregation i ever attended, and an older sister would always play the kingdom melody.
there was actual singing - not mindless droning and humming.

How many people can play those kingdom songs competently nowadays? Talent dies off, and unless it's replaced, you have to go for the easier solution
When live music was permitted, not all kingdom halls had people who were talented enough or ambitious enough to play. I remember guests at the hall I attended making comments about the live music. I think it is a shame that a person who is willing and able to play (competently) isn't allowed to because of corporate policy. On the positive side, I can't help but think about the scores of kids who are thankful that they are not being forced to take piano lessons because the parents think it would be neat to have the kids play at the hall. That happened to me.

The congregation I attended had a sister who was an excellent pianist. When she wasn't at the hall to play, the level of singing by the congregation really nose dived. One day the piano just disappered without much comment from the platform. Orders from the top I suppose. I also remember circuit assemblies that had small orchestras made up of musicians from the various halls. The music was quite good. They disappeared around the same time the piano did.

I had to put one of my cats to sleep a few weeks ago. Its a hard thing to do. It sounds like Oreo had a great run though and the care you gave him toward the end was incredible. My hat is off to you. Oreo was a very lucky cat.

- kind of thing.. anyway, nice to have read your posts and i really enjoy the sense of community here.
